 In the WWF nature and wild life reserve of the Cesine protected species of migratory birds (ducks, awks, swans, cormorants, coots, flamingos, herons, plovers, bitterns) stay in or near the salt little lakes behind the sand dunes on the shore of the Adriatic sea. In this nature reserve rare species of flora can also be seen.
Very important for their peculiarities, and worth a visit are
- the Alimini lakes near Otranto,
- the Orte pool in Otranto in an abandoned bauxite cave,
- the Canals in Ugento,
- the Captain's lake and its eels.
In Salento there are also wonderful natural monuments such as: the 700 year old oak tree in Tricase, the ancient olive groves in Vernole, the oak tree which grows in Macrì farm house in the country near Supersano, the carob tree in the Paccianna farm house in Gallipoli, the enormous ilex called "la lizza te la motta" (the oak of the bandits) in the country near Pisignano.
Particularly important species of flora are the wild orchids and other very rare flowers such as the Salentino orris, the Iris Revoluta which grows n the Moiuso rock on the Isle of the Rabbits in Porto Cesareo, remains of the ancient oak woods ( the Rauccio forest) that spread throughout Salento in the past.
S.Cesarea Spa is famous for its thermal waters. Mansions and charming country cottages with beautiful close gardens scattered throughout Salento.
Sailing the transparent green or blue sea in a boat to visit marine caves and secluded coves while having lunch aboard eating the fish you fished beforehand.
The lovely show of the splendid underworld of the Jonian and Adriatic seas is one of breathtaking beauty.
Moreover hikes are also organized to make you enjoy nature in its different forms.
