Alezio
religious festivals and local traditions
the celebration of the Patron Saint
The Patron Saint of Alezio is the Madonna dell'Assunta who is celebrated every year on 15 August . In the past women used to walk on their knees from the town to the church to pay homage to the Blessed Virgin.
There is also a very important village fair which was established by Gioacchino Napoleone then King of the Two Sicilies on 25 July 1810. The fair lasted 8 days and those days commerce was duty free.
Still nowadays, on each day of the " novena" a whistle is blown and a drum is played to announce the beginning of the festival.
According to an ancient tradition, in times past up to the end of the nineteenth century, the "tiara" a popular chant of praise to the Virgin was sung.
the Lizziceddha
Another important village festival is the so called Lizziceddha celebrated every year on 27 August to honor the Madonna dell'Assunta who, according to the popular tradition, miraculously protected Alezio from a very destructive earthquake. It did not cause either victims among the population or damages to the buildings and consequently the villagers attributed the miracle to the Madonna dell'Assunta.
To thank and praise Her a solemn festival was organized, the "Lizziceddha"
It is also said that the Virgin while leaving Alezio after saving the village from the earthquake, on her way to Gallipoli stopped near a boundery stone of an estate called "Croce te la Lizza" to have a rest.
To recall that legendary episode a memorial stone was erected and later a little chapel was build and dedicated to the Virgin. Every year on 27 August the believers go there in procession to pray the Blessed Virgin Mary.
